Rough Bluegrass. Cool Season Grasses

Poa trivialis (Rough bluegrass; UK: Rough-stalked meadow-grass), is a perennial plant, and is regarded in the USA as an ornamental plant and is of the Poa family. It is very common in meadows and pastures throughout Britain. Its preferred habitat is moist, sheltered places. Its herbage is herbage is plentiful and fairly nutritious - not as much as Poa annua or Poa pratensis. It is useful for grazing on heavy and damp soil. It also copes well with the polluted atmosphere of towns and cities. It is in flower from June onwards thoughout the summer.

Though often considered a weed of golf courses, some use it as a turits lighter green color. It is an invasive species in the Great Lakes region and was first sited in 184. It has short stolons. The leaves are broad and tapering, and the sheathes are very rough. They have pointed ligules 4-10mm long. Compare to Annual Meadow grass Poa annua which is silvery and pointed, and Common Meadow grass Poa pratensis which is short and blunt.

The roughish, slender stem grows 30 to 60 cm high. Compare with smooth meadow grass Poa annua which has a smooth stem. The panicle is green and 15 cm long. The spikelets are egg-shaped.

Kentucky Blugrass. Cool Season Grasses

Poa pratensis forms a valuable pasture plant, characteristic of well-drained, fertile soil. It is also used for making lawns in parks and gardens. Poa is Greek for fodder. The name Kentucky Bluegrass derives from its flower heads, which are blue when the plant is allowed to grow to its natural height of two to three feet. The rootstock is creeping, with runners. The broad, blunt leaves tend to spread at the base, forming close mats.

Poa pratensis is a herbaceous perennial plant 30–70 centimetres (12–28 in) tall. The leaves have boat-shaped tips, narrowly-linear, up to 20 centimetres (8 in) long and 3–5 millimetres (0.12–0.20 in) broad, smooth or slightly roughened, with a rounded to truncate ligule 1–2 millimetres (0.039–0.079 in) long. The conical panicle is 5–20 centimetres (2–8 in) long, with 3 to 5 branches in the basal whorls; the oval spikelets are 3–6 millimetres (0.12–0.24 in) long with 2 to 5 florets, and are purplish-green or grey. They are in flower from May to July, compared to Annual Meadowgrass (Poa annua) which is in flower for eight months of the year.

Bentgrass. Cool Season Grasses

Agrostis (bent or bentgrass) is a genus of over 100 species belonging to the grass family Poaceae. Some species of bents are commonly used for lawn grass. This is a desirable grass for golf course tees, fairways and greens.

Bentgrass is used in turf applications for its numerous advantages: it can be mowed to a very short length without damage, it can handle a great amount of foot traffic, it has a shallow root system that is thick and dense allowing it to be seeded and grow rather easily, and it has a pleasing, deep green appearance. The name "bent" refers to the shallow roots, which bend just below the surface of the soil to propagate laterally.

Creeping Bent

(Agrostis stolonifera) is the most commonly used species of Agrostis. Historically, it was often called Orcheston long grass, after a village on Salisbury Plain. It is cultivated almost exclusively on golf courses, especially on putting greens. Creeping Bent aggressively produces horizontal stems, called stolons, that run along the soil's surface. These allow Creeping Bent to form dense stands under conducive conditions and outcompete bunch-type grass and broadleaf weeds. As such, if infested in a home lawn, it can become a troublesome weed problem. The leaves of the bentgrass are long and slender.

Common Bent

(Agrostis capillaris) was brought to America from Europe. This was the type of grass that was used on the lawns of most estates. It is the tallest of the bents with very fine texture and like most bent grasses grows very dense. Although this species has been used on golf courses and sporting fields it is better suited for lawns. Colonial Bent is fairly easy to grow from seeds and fertilization of the lawn is not as intense. This grass also takes longer to establish than Creeping Bent. However it does not require the intense maintenance.

Velvet Bent

(Agrostis canina) gets it name for the velvet appearance that this grass produces. It has the finest texture of all the bent grasses. This grass was used in Europe for estate lawns and golf courses because it could be cut so short. This bent grass requires more upkeep and maintenance than Creeping Bent and because of this has been overlooked as a practical turf for current golf courses. This species also has a lighter color than the two previous species.
